Reasons & Effects: Students Lack Confidence?
Why and when students/kids lack confidence?
Children don’t understand the learning process. If they find they can’t do something, they tend to load it on themselves, rather than on an education system that, in this instance, has failed them. “I can’t do this, so I must lack the ability to do it.” The most common reason for lack of confidence is the presence of “holes”, missing links in previous understanding that are essential for confidently attacking the task that is presented now.
What are the negative outcomes of lack confidence and how does it affect their performance in school?
The confident student performs so much better than one who lacks confidence! The confident student will approach new subject matter knowing that success will happen. If one way doesn’t work, another way will present itself. A student who is not confident will baulk when things become difficult and so not progress nearly as quickly in skills and knowledge.
What is your approach helping students to develop confidence?
We put a lot of effort into filling in the “holes”, making sure foundations are laid for confidently and successfully gaining the skill being attempted. We also continually assess, making sure students are at the ideal level for a particular activity. If it’s too easy or too hard, even by a small amount, students will not progress as confidently or as quickly as when we get it just right. When success is achieved, we use various means to celebrate that success.
What's the difference you will see once their confidence is developed and built?
Once confidence is developed and built, it shows in many ways. The speed of progress improves, as does the breadth of understanding. It’s wonderful to see a child with newly developed confidence. The shoulders are back, the head held high. Sometimes a child’s whole outlook on life can be dramatically improved.
What can parents do?
Try to be always positive with your children. Celebrate their successes and allow them to make mistakes. Encourage them to progress in their skills and knowledge without expecting too much of them. Spend time with them, listening to them, playing games with them, showing them how you use the skills that you have. Show them how you are willing risk failure and be willing to attempt solutions of problems that present themselves.
