Interview with Rockstart

1. How do I learn drumming without a drum set?

There's a lot you can do with a pair of sticks and a practice pad. They range from $20-$80. My favourite is the Ecopad, it's around $70 but has excellent rebound. Any $20 pad will do the job though.

And keep in mind when buying sticks - I've found the $15 pairs last about four times as long as the$5 pairs. They're weighted better too. Vic Firth and Vater are the best in my opinion. Use a metronome for the most effective practice (I use Mobile Metronome, free app for Google phones).

A good method for learning drum beats without a kit is using any old chair with a back on it. Place the practice pad on the seat of the chair, which becomes the snare drum. Use the back of the chair for the hi-hat.

2. There are so many types of drums , which is the most suitable one for a child or a new beginner to learn ?

A lot of parents go for electric kits which are great, as you can control the volume. The downside is the dynamics aren't realistic - you can turn the volume knob down. I find children who learn on electric kits play too loud when they get on an acoustic kit. Apart from that they are good for practice. Yamaha is a good brand and reasonably priced. Watch out for the really cheap electric kits. You get what you pay for! There are some good recommendations here: http://bestunder1000.com/top-electronic-drum-set-for-1000-dollars/

If you have understanding neighbours you could try an acoustic kit - Yamaha, Gretsch, Pearl are good brands. Don't forget your ear protection too - drums can damage your hearing if you don't wear protection. Foam earplugs or earmuffs will suffice.

3. How long does it take to learn to play the drums?

That's a difficult question to answer. There are so many variables. It depends on age, commitment, learning styles, teacher, previous musical experience, and ability to focus. Most students can play the basic rock beat by the end of the first lesson. Personally I've been playing for 25 years and I'm still learning - I'll let you know when I'm done!
